Recent Rockport Work
A patio made bigger, steps to the water, and paths through the garden
On a recent Rockport project we removed some of the existing pavers and blended them with new ones across the expanded area. Instead of ending the old patio at a hard line, we mixed old and new throughout, which gave a natural transition that looked intentional rather than mismatched. The slight variation added character. If your patio is too small but still sound, ask whether the old pavers can stay in the design. The patio design and installation page covers the process, and our guide to design patio pavers goes further on matching new pavers to old.
A Rockport client with steps leading down to a dock chose thermal-finished granite for them. Even when the morning dew is heavy, the client feels secure walking on them. Thermal finishing uses intense heat to burst surface crystals, which leaves a textured, naturally non-slip face. That is our usual recommendation for steps that stay damp, such as shaded or north-facing ones. Our steps and brick stairs page explains the options.
Two more Rockport jobs were about paths. On a challenging sloped backyard we followed the natural contours of the land and laid a rustic stone pathway of irregular slabs, with creeping thyme and moss planted between the stones, so an awkward, unused slope became a favorite garden feature. In a cottage garden we built a winding bluestone path with wide joints planted with creeping thyme, connecting the main patio to a small meditation garden. See walkways and stairs for how we plan them.
A steep Rockport slope has also been stabilized with a retaining wall: see retaining walls. For everything we build, start at Hardscaping and Masonry or browse the gallery. Google shows a 4.9 rating from 36 ratings for George Hardscaping.
Rockport sits on Cape Ann, where the City of Gloucester's geology page describes granite bedrock with glacial boulders scattered across the land. On a Cape Ann lot, rock near the surface is part of planning any patio, path or set of steps.

Planning a Rockport Job
What these Rockport jobs asked of the design
Three points that came out of the work above.
-
01
Matching old pavers to new
Weathered pavers and new ones rarely match in color. Blending them across the whole area, as in the Rockport expansion, avoids a hard line between old and new. Keep 5 to 10 percent of any paver order for later repairs or additions.

02
Grip where it stays damp
Dew and shade keep steps near the water damp. Texture matters as much as looks, which is why the dock steps are thermal-finished granite rather than polished stone.

03
Following the slope
On the sloped Rockport yard the path follows the land instead of cutting against it, and the plantings between the stones soften the edges. Site conditions such as ledge and wetlands are covered on our Hardscaping and Masonry page.
Questions
Rockport hardscaping questions
Does George Hardscaping work in Rockport?
Yes, Rockport is one of the 20 North Shore towns we serve, and we have patio and granite step work there. Call (781) 222-0805 or send the form below.
Can old pavers stay when a Rockport patio is expanded?
Often yes. On a recent Rockport project we lifted some existing pavers and blended them with new ones across the larger area, so the join looks natural. Photos of your current patio help us judge it.
What stone suits steps down to a dock?
Thermal-finished granite is what we used for a Rockport client's dock steps, and the client feels secure on them even in heavy morning dew. Any stone near water should be chosen for grip first.
How long has George Hardscaping served the area?
We have served the North Shore since 2005, which is more than 20 years. Our base is 74 Essex Ave in Gloucester, a short drive from Rockport.
Can you build a wall on a steep Rockport slope?
Yes. A steep Rockport backyard slope was stabilized with a retaining wall, and the retaining walls page has the details.
How do I get a Rockport estimate?
Fill in the form below, call (781) 222-0805, or use the request estimate page. Describe the space and what you want it to do; photos and a note about slope or ledge help. We also offer land clearing, excavation and tree services if site prep is needed.
