What We Clear
Brush, small trees, stumps and rocks, then grading
Land clearing for us means taking an overgrown or untouched piece of ground down to something you can build on or use. We remove brush and small trees, deal with stumps and rocks, and then grade the ground so it is ready for what comes next.
We clear new lots and grade new properties, and we cut trenches where the job needs them. Everything that comes off the ground, brush, stumps and the rest, we haul away. We have the equipment for the work. The photo here shows a mini excavator with a mulching head clearing brush and saplings.
If you plan to build on the cleared ground, we also make patios, walkways and retaining walls, and the digging for them is on our excavation page. Large trees are covered on tree services.

Before Clearing Starts
Three rules worth checking first
Clearing is quick to start and slow to undo. These are the public rules we point homeowners to.
-
01
Dig Safe
Massachusetts law counts grading as excavation, so Dig Safe's 72 hour notice (call 811) applies when clearing includes it.
-
02
Wetlands
Under state rules, work within 100 feet of a wetland, called the buffer zone, needs a filing with the conservation commission. Gloucester's ordinance adds its own rules.
-
03
Burning brush
In Gloucester, open burning of brush needs a fire department permit and is allowed only from January 15 to May 1. Other towns set their own rules.
Clearing and building, planned together
We clear the ground and build the patio, walkway, steps or wall that goes on it, so it can be one conversation.
Questions
Land clearing questions
What land clearing do you do?
We clear brush, small trees, stumps and rocks, and grade the ground afterward. We clear new lots, grade new properties and do trenching, and we haul away all the material.
Do you have the equipment for it?
Yes, we have the equipment needed for the work, and the photo on this page shows a mulching head clearing brush and saplings.
Do I need to call 811 before clearing?
If the clearing includes grading or digging, yes. Massachusetts law defines excavation broadly and grading is on the list, so notice goes to Dig Safe at 811 at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays.
Does clearing near a wetland need approval?
It can. State rules treat land within 100 feet of a wetland as a buffer zone, and work there needs a filing with the conservation commission. Gloucester has its own wetlands ordinance, so ask the Conservation Division before the work is planned.
Can I burn the brush?
In Gloucester, open burning of brush needs a fire department permit, is allowed only from January 15 to May 1, and must be at least 75 feet from dwellings. We haul material away, so burning is not needed. Other towns have their own rules.
What should I tell you about the area?
Roughly how big it is, what is growing there, anything you want to keep, where your lot line runs and how the area is reached from the street. A photo with the edges pointed out helps.
